Sports Compulsory For Every Child

Sports has been made compulsory for all schoolchildren. This follows a decision taken by the Sports Ministry in conjunction with the Education Ministry.
Accordingly, every school child will have to take up a sports discipline and undergo physical excersises for ten minutes two days a week.
According to the Sports Ministry Media Secretary, Harsha Abeykoon, both the Sports Minister, Mahindananda Aluthgamage and Education Minister, Bandula Gunawardena will make surprise visits to schools island-wide to ensure that this directive is complied with.

Abeykoon told ‘Sports Star’ that sports has been made compulsory under the national program and this directive will be enforced by the Education Ministry and a circular has already been issued to all school heads, masters in charge and sports instructors.
This program will envisage the evaluation of school children’s physical viability annually. But children below the age of 13 will not be drawn to competitive sports. Also after the Grade V scholarships, students will undergo physical examination on entering Grade VI and will accordingly be slotted into suitable sports disciplines.
He elaborated that students, who have excelled at international level, will be brought under a marks percentage and very talented students at international level will benefit for university entrance under a special scheme under this national program. They will also accrue several other benefits in furthering their sports careers.
The Sports Ministry will also take steps to provide sports facilities to all sub standard schools including setting up playgrounds.
This new program is been implemented so as to fine comb for latent talent by coordinating all provinces and harness this talent in view of the 2017 Asian Youth Games.
