The unassailed statesmanship of His Excellency Mahinda Rajapaksa, President of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka, has been globally recognized for the imperturbable aplomb he has continued to display in the face of challenges and obstacles, excruciatingly placed in his path by relentless historical processes over several troubling decades. The President emerged triumphant proving his stature as a Statesman of formidable leadership assets.
He is equally an exemplary Sportsman. He has upheld the noble values of sports, eschewing what is not just. He as a classical sportsman accepts both defeat and victory unbowed. In the global context of sports, what is not proper or not clean is promptly dubbed, ‘It is not cricket.’ President Mahinda Rajapaksa never stoops to anything that is ‘Not Cricket.’ That is the simple explanation why he deserves the honored appellation ‘Sportsman President.’
We dedicate this inaugural issue of ‘Sports Today’ to H. E. Mahinda Rajapaksa, Sportsman President, fully convinced that he can guide this land to a haven of Sports where it will always be “Cricket.”
